There is also an interesting book published in 1910 about the San Francisco Earthquake.
It is called "The Vanished Ruin Era" by Louis J Stellmann.
It is filled with lots of photos of the ruins after the quake

One more for the topic. My favorite card of this topic is Bujutsu's card featuring the dead white horse with the death agony expression of dread and horror.

Another great card stampfan. There must have been many sets produced for this catastrophe I'm sure.

I'm new to this forum, so I'm slowly going through some of the old topics and was happy to find this one. The 1906 quake has become a favorite subject of mine and whenever I can pick up inexpensive cards I grab them. As mentioned earlier, there are a great many types. I'll post what I have, as I have time to scan them. Most of mine are unused, but some have notations that appear to be from residents.

Let's start with a couple before and after images. The first is of City Hall in downtown San Francisco. This card was mailed in January of 1906. In less than two months the building was in ruins.







Many people are not aware that what caused the greatest damage was not the quake but the fires that broke out across the city from ruptured gas mains. Some burned for two solid days; the fire department was simply overwhelmed. Here's a view, looking north before the quake and another as the city burned.

More views of the aftermath. You'll notice City Hall in the background of several shots, which can help determine the direction the photo was taken.

Hibernia Bank was one of the few buildings that survived relatively intact. The dome was repaired and it still stands today. http://thehiberniabanksf.com/



Many others were not so lucky.

Across the Bay in Palo Alto, Stanford University did not fare well either.

It truly is amazing what is available out there. I am sure that someone could specialize in the earthquake alone with the different postcards that were produced.
