I was looking at some stamps from around 1900 that were billed as "unused-no gum". So when I look in a catalog - am I looking at unused or used stamps. We all know it's possible to get an uncancelled stamp, soak it off and there you go. I assume I should always treat this as used unless there is an unused/no gum listed in the catalog? How say you?

The following is taken from Wikipedia.

Quote:
a mint stamp is a stamp which is in its original state of issue, is unused, has never been mounted and has full gum, if issued with gum.The term applies equally to postage stamps and revenue stamps.

In practice, the term is used within philately to refer to any stamp that appears to be unused, including those without gum, or previously hinged.

Unlike other collectibles, a mint stamp may be in poor condition but still be regarded as being in mint condition as long as it is apparently unused.

So I think your stamp is still mint but maybe only F-VF. Instead of XF.

Interesting...I have been wondering about prices of no gum/regummed stamps.

I have been watching mid value Columbians (10c, 15c, 30c, etc) on ebay and elsewhere. I'm getting the impression that the no gum/regummed copies sell at about the used price?

That sort of the general feeling that I got, but I'm not good at sorting out the "random insanity" factor from prices paid on ebay.

Is there a formula?

The U.S. Scott Specialized gives prices for Unused No Gum stamps through the 1893 Columbian issue (up to Scott 245).

I would think that an Unused No Gum U.S. stamp issued between 1894 and 1935 (Scott 771) would be priced somewhere between the Used and the Unused Original Gum values (except for NGAI issues).

For U.S. stamps issued after Scott 771, I imagine an Unused No Gum stamp would be valued at the Used price level.
