Came across this by accident when surfing the web. As with many riddles, some are more clever than others, but it could make for a nice stamp program, especially for kids, so I thought I'd share the link:

Thank you scifi and Rod.

Rod, your riddle has me stumped, but made me think of another one I've heard:

Q: How is a naughty boy like a postage stamp?

A: They both need a good licking.

Rod, I've been thinking about your riddle and wonder if the answer is similar to the riddle I posted.

Maybe something like: One GIVES lickings and the other GETS lickings?

Maybe someone else can come up with the real answer!

Rod, I did a Google search and found a similar one to your cigarette card:

Q: What is the difference between a stubborn horse and a postage stamp?
A: You lick one with a stick and stick the other with a lick.

(From The Literary World, 1861)

Here's another similar to Rod's cigarette card. It's from "The Literary World," 1851.

Q: What is the difference between a stubborn horse and a postage stamp?

A: You lick one with a stick, and stick the other with a lick.

That was me that solved it years ago on SCF here Rod. I remember Spock commenting on it and saying the rod should be cane or something.

. . . and that's basically how I arrived at a solution also Spanish Moss. Well done indeed.

Well, nice to see the reverse of the card after all this time. Patience is a virtue.

I remember that as it was near my joining here I think but for the life of me I can't find it using Search on here nor on Google nor and I have little experience using the Way Back machine to look for such stuff. Maybe I imagined it all! A precognitive dream!

Sorry for the double post above. The computer was acting up.

The actual date from the article with the riddle should be 1851.
