I'm a new member specializing in duck stamps (both Fed and state). Do any of you have similar interests?

I couldn't agree more. They are certainly among the most beautiful of stamps. What advice are you seeking relative to duck stamps? I'll try to answer your questions.

Dan,

i am new to collecting stamps in general.right now I have decided to start a topical collection on farming/agriculture.if I do have a chance to get some duck stamps I will snag them though.

i really dont know that much about duck stamps.when I started hunting is basically when my collection started but, while going through some of my dads things I found some he had.i guess i'll have to try and find them again.

correct me if I am wrong but dont some duck stamps get pretty pricey?
also, what state stamps do you collect?

T.J.

Here's the full federal duck stamp collection, for anyone interested:

and here is a commercial site that lists the state duck stamps (but no pictures):

The ones I have seen look beautiful. Can anyone show me pics of theirs? How does one collect these? Used or Mint? Or whichever is available? I don't hunt or collect them myself but would like to learn about them. The more I learn and see the more interested I become and will probably end up collecting some at one time or another.

I have all the Federal duck stamps thru RW60 and all but four of the early ducks for every state thru about 1990. I have many duplicates and when I have enough posts I hope to trade or sell them to other interested forum members.

The Sam Houston Duck Co. (shduck.com) issues a beautifully illustrated catalogue of duck stamps that gives collectors a good idea of the scope of the programs, the beauty of these stamps, and an idea of prices. Some of the early issues are scarce and therefore pricey but most are reasonable.

The 2011 US artist-signed federal duck stamp is scheduled for release on June 24. This year, the rules have reverted to earlier rules -- no limits and no pre-orders. While the quantities now are much higher than the debacle associated with the 2005 issue (see Rod's pic of the 2005 pane above; there were also 2 different signature colors), it should be interesting to see if a few dealers might attempt to corner the market.

Recently, pre-orders were limited to 1 pane per person and 2 people per address. As a result, those who wanted the artist-signed panes were able to get them at original price, but the panes did not sell out in the past 3 years. In fact, 2009 and 2010 artist signed panes are STILL available. Given that they didn't sell out, I can understand why they wanted to revise the rules.

I assume the artist will sign 10,000 of them, as in past years. While 10x more than the 2005 issue, it is still a relatively small quantity. At $25 each (plus shipping), it is not out of the reach of a few dealers to attempt to corner the market on the first day of sale.

I don't collect these duck stamps, but it should be interesting to see how the sales unfold...

k

Thanks for explaining why the 2005 was so expensive.
