Well I'm very very new to the world of stamps. I just inherited about a hundred letters my great grandparents sent back-and-forth while my grandpa was at war. I don't know much about the letters but I do know they were sent in the early 1900s somewhere between 1910 and 1920. Most of the letters have the Washington two cent stamps on them but not all of them some have others some are even unused and to be honest I don't even know where to begin. I don't know anything about stamps hopefully you all can provide the help I need to get started The stamps are still on the envelopes. And since I don't know anything about this stuff I don't even know if I should try to remove them more less how to remove them really any information and tips you could provide would be beneficial I was really wondering if any of the stamps could possibly be rare are worth anything and I don't know how to go about that that is the main reason I'm here. If there is a forum category that you think could help me with this it would be great to know it I do find the stamps to be very interesting Since they're so old and part of my family's history. I really look forward to everyone's response and ideas about how I should start getting involved with this collection. I'm going to try to upload a few pictures of the stamps if it doesn't work i'm sorry and maybe someone could help me with that too. Thank you all for reading this and for any response given.
Michael

Welcome!
You have a neat collection of family heirlooms. While you never know, chances are greatest that there is not any rare stamps among them. But learning about these stamps, and organizing them for future generations of your family is definitely a worthwhile pursuit. Please also note that stamps are like many other things, condition is quite meaningful. Most of the items you show have some significant condition issues.

With this all said, you might start with checking out the Stamp Smarter website http://www.stampsmarter.com/1847usa...ankmain.html

Many times there can be subtle differences in stamps that look the same. A stamp can have the same design but the perforations or watermark may be different. This occurs because many times there were running changes in the stamp production over the many years the stamps were in use. It is not uncommon to have significant value differences based upon these attributes.

I would also add that for the time being do not remove any stamps from the covers and keep anything in the envelope (contents) together until you become more knowledgeable.

There is also a US catalog, called Scott Specialize US Catalog, that you may want to reference at some point. Catalogs are not cheap, but you can often find them at your local library. But for now you can begin learning by using the Stamp Smarter site and asking questions of the kind folks in this community.

Another possibility is that you may be able to track your grandfathers location and movements during the war years by analyzing the postmarks. Very nice family history collection! Welcome to the forums!

Welcome mlussardi9614!
You are so fortunate - blessed with stamps that have their own backgrounds and blessed with a possible adventurous undertaking in tracing your grandfather's whereabouts during the war. Good luck in both areas.
Honeydo.
