My First Box O' Kiloware

Since I'm just starting my collection, I decided to start by buying some cheap boxes of kiloware off Ebay. I bought two 2 pound boxes of US on-paper stamps from 2 different people. One was an auction where I was the only bidder, and one was a Buy-it-now. Each box cost me under $20 with shipping.

I wasn't expecting much out of them, all I really wanted was a starting point and some practice material. I believe in starting from the ground floor. I need practice soaking, identifying and mounting. Fundamentals First!! That's pretty much what I got with the 1st box, practice stamps. This is the Buy-it-now box.

The seller added an extra pound for me because there was a lot of paper on the older stamps, which was quite nice of him. About a quarter of the box is made up of 37 cent flag and egret stamps, and another half of the box is stamps from the 30s with big pieces of the paper still attached. I think I now have the largest collection of 3 cent NRA stamps on the planet The egrets are going to be my first attempt at soaking. I'm actually looking forward to 37 cent flag stamps. Identifying all 12 varieties will be a good chalenge.

I recently won a box of kiloware (on paper) from ebay also, for $27. I am thinking that the pictures likely show the best stamps from it, but I have dealt with the seller before, and he does break up a lot of collections and hoardings, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

There are also several varieties of the Egret stamps regarind color shading if I recall. Have fun sorting and ID'ing.

That's a great way to start into the hobby and have a lot of fun!

It sounds like you're taking a reasonable approach to getting started. I would guess that the 50 most active members of the SCF have made every mistake that can be made at one time or another. For example, dogs will eat German plate blocks and wives will occasionally throw away "old used envelopes." Ask a lot of questions and do a lot of online research.

Welcome to the forum , I also had my first Kiloware experience and was pretty happy with the outcome , ended up less than a penny a stamp including shipping and was able to put together many sets , wasn't my area of collecting but it was alot of fun to go thru , summer is here and I'm so active outside that I rather leave stamps for Fall and Winter , later I plan on giving away some of them and maybe trade for stamps to complete the set , oh........... BTW the stamps are all from Australia and they have plenty of kid appeal.

So, I finally got finished soaking and sorting my shoebox full of 37c Flags and Egrets. I have somewhere in the neighborhood of 1700 Flags.

I found a guide to sorting the Flag stamps on the web and found out there are 21 different stamps if you don't include some of the die cut varieties, (i.e. peak to peak).

I ended up with 20 of the 21 varieties, missing only one of the non- denominated ones.

I did get all of the Egrets however.

I'm going to continue on with the newer stamps, to get all the hard soaking out of the way. Self adhesives are tough

Do you mean there are 21 different 37c Flag stamps? Or something else ? Are you including the undenominated ??

There are 21 variations of the 37c flag stamp, including the non denominated, with there own Scott number.

This gentleman gives flow charts for identifying all the varieties.
He also lists another 4 variations of die cuts. These do not have separate Scott #'s.

I have the set of 21, but two of them are mint as I have been unable to find used copies thus far.
I also have the Mystic identification page......a great read.

Now I will have to look into the extra varieties mentioned in the file, it's never ending with these Flags !!

I have completed used sets of Flag and Liberty and Flag over Porch as per Scott specialized and am slowly pressing on with the rest.
The 42c set of 4 is my latest venture....but I do have a great buddy in Florida who does much of the hard work !!
