Double Impression Of Text?

I've got a couple of stamps where the text appears to be a double impression of one of the colors. Below are photos of Scott #1470 (8c on left stamp appears doubled) and Scott #1579, where all the text on the left stamp appears doubled.

Any idea what is causing this? Is this a double impression, or some kind of other error?

It looks like one of the colors on each stamp was out of register, meaning it is improperly lined up when compared to the other colors.
