You have an L-1 Var 2., the precancel overprint is common worth .15. I do not believe any current catalog will give you a value of your exact example! In my 1928 Rotnem catalog you example was valued at 1.50. |

Hi, warrehouse... thank you kindly as well..
I was just curious... I'm not a precancel collector - I purchased it as a space filler for 311, given I'll likely never own a mint 311, unless Powerball is nice to me... (smiling)
Randall
Edit : P.S. Just found out Powerball is $101M at a 7-11 pit stop, and just purchased 10 tix... (smiling) hope everyone reading this picks up a few... Good Luck !

Your stamp is much better centered precancel than the one in the auction shown by Gar. |

Thanks again... I figured if I must have a space filler for a high value stamp, it might as well be a 'looker'... |

There is an answer from the precancel world. According to the new (2011) Precancel Stamp Society Classics Catalog, it is 20.00 USD. Most precancel dealers could supply one for that price, altho probably not as nice as yours. The 2011 catalog prices everything pre-1908, the years up to 1922 will be released in the next few years. |

chasa... thank you kindly... I paid $15 and some change for the stamp, and I feel it was well worth it, and when I receive it next week, it'll be in it's new home in my album... |

why couldn't you use it as a 311 used, the catalog value 2013yr is $90.00 for a 311 used. why would a precancel make the value go down so much? it is still used right? I just got one of those thought it was 80-90bucks found in bankers box I bought on ebay. |

Hi, Larry... true... Scott price is $90 for used, and a precancel is technically a used stamp, given it has a cancellation...
True market value would be 10% to 15% of that... $13-$14 (in the current marketplace) so, at the $15 I paid for the nice centering, I'm thinking I paid exactly the right price for it... perhaps even a little less than its true intrinsic value... |

The value goes down because the many collectors of used US don't like precancels, and there are plenty around for the precancel collectors. This is a common phenomenon for precancels and perfins. You can usually buy precancels for way under SCV's. Low price but we love them. |

Not exactly.. the PSS catalog has it at 20$ normal position, 75$ if double precancel, 125$ if doubled one normal, one invert. The PSS catalog tries to be a net-price catalog, discounting is uncommon and rare ones can sell for over cv. |

It's interesting how they price the precancel market versus the cancel market...
I only collect mint U.S. and the only cancels I have are space fillers, but I prefer those fillers to be appealing to the eye, which is why I opted for this stamp. The dollar value in the marketplace isn't that significant to me (in the sense) as long as I feel it is reasonable for the 'job' I'm giving it... and, should I ever sell it, I'll likely break even, or maybe take a few dollars loss... it really wouldn't matter, given it would only happen if I purchased a mint 311, which would not be a likely event in the near future... |
