Hi all, I just got these in the mail today and I do not normally collect anything but US and Germany items, so I am completely lost on these items. Any, and all, information would be greatly appreciated. #1 This is just a homemade envelope without any contents. I am guessing this is 1862 for the year. The back stamp is for Genova. #2 This one is from 1834. I have no idea what the letter is about as it is in a language I cannot read. It is a pretty goo length letter as well. #3 This happens to be my new oldest stampless cover coming in at May 18th, 1797. The letter is to an uncle and tells him he is not feeling well and had a tooth pulled because of a toothache. Thanks for looking and heliping. I just got over 200 covers so will be posting a few in the coming days. Sirrus

Regarding number 2 ... it would be nice to see what language is used in the letter as it may give the location of the sender. The straight line FERRARA could be the sender's location or perhaps a transit mark. I believe the letters AGDP follow the Bologna 18. mark in which case it would mean Administratore Generale Della Posta. |

Thank you dlawson for that information.
Scotzm, great information to have I appreciate it all. I will get a scan of the letter up here in a little while. Hopefully we can gain some more information from it as well.
Filipo, wow, thank you for the link and the information. Being a poet and a poetry lover this is exciting information to me. I love when unexpected treasures of any kind show up. I also have a few covers that came in this lot that are either to the original inventor of the colt firearm, or his nephew, I have not figured this out completely yet. I did not know these were in the lot and my son loves anything to do with historical guns so it was another one of those neat surprises. Thanks. |

Not great scans, but if you save them, then enlarge them they are pretty easy to read.

The letter sure looks like Italian to me. I have only a 100 word vocabulary in Italian but I can read bits and pieces here and there. Are you sure it is not written in Italian? |

The second letter is from Ferrara and is dated "Ferrara 17th August 1834" at the bottom of the letter with a "BOLOGNA 18 AGOš" (18th August) arrival mark on the back. |

I like the form of address on the third letter sent to Le Havre, "To Citizen..." - very suitable for the French revolutionary period. |

Kimo, I am sure you are right. Thanks for looking in on these.
Nigelc, thank you for the information and coming in to look at these. The last one is interesting to me as it is written in English.
Does anyone know enough to give me an idea of what the letter content is about. Curious if this letter may be from a family member as well after filipo's earlier post. Thanks again all.

sirruspoe, you will need to upload that letters in a higher resolution, if you would like that someone translate it to you. that letter starts: "mio caro segnore et amico", which means "my dear lord and friend"... so, it is not handwritten by a family member... possibly by some old friend who have asked him for some favor. You will need to upload scans in a higher resolutons, for example here: tinypic.com , and just copy the links you'll get here. it seems that James Prince, could be a historical figure... "Marshall of Massachussets"... he has also been a witness of some kind of the monster... try to google more about him with these linse "James Prince" "Marshall of Massachussets". Possibly he has been only on a travel in France in that time when the letter has been addressed to him in Havre... or possibly he lived there, but later relocated in the Boston, MS. |

Thanks again filipo. You have found some great information on these and lead me to a way to learn more. I am not home at the moment, but will see what I can do about better scans later on. Again thank you. |
