I believe that you have an impressed duty stamp from Ireland. It is embossed onto a document to show payment of the tax. I'm guessing it was stamped February 1, 1895, though January 2nd is a possibility, too, I suppose. Barber and Brown have a catalogue [The Impressed Duty Stamps of Ireland: A Priced Catalogue of Embossed Non-Adhesive Fiscal Stamps (1774 to the Present Time)], but I don't have it.

The "1" and the "2" are changeable date slugs for day and month; the "95" is also a slug that can be changed, for the year.

The "D" at the top left is a code of sorts for the stamp, and is not changeable. It is a permanent part of the die.

Because they could be used to show payment of a tax, the dies were strictly accounted for, and generally disposed of officially. Scan through the catalogue listings and I think you will see that it will often show a defaced (or destroyed) date.

The fire was 26 years after your stamp was impressed, so I don't think the fire is relevant to value.

But it is still nice to know what you have. And it might be rare, anyway...just not for those reasons.

The listing tells me that the die was used from 1863 to 1921, at least, and finally destroyed in 1924. I can't tell from the excerpt if it was repaired and sent back to Dublin to be put back in use, or whether it sat at Somerset House until being destroyed in 1924.

Your stamp is from the middle of its life (1895). It is a one-penny stamp. You would think it must be extremely common.

But that is nice information to have.
