Morning all,
I am struggling to put a date on these, can anyone help?
I have been up-dating my Americas collection and in the lack of any specialised catalogue I am a bit stumped on some.
I may be asking a few questions like this!
First up is a pair of Venezuela inscribed Estado Guyana - may be revenues of some type? Any idea when?
All assistance appreciated.

Hi David,

They're Venezuela SG 262 and 264 from 1903. They were issued in the Venezuelan state of Guyana during the Civil War. The ship is "El Libertador". SG warns that the majority of stamps on the market are reprints.

Thanks a lot Nigel. My 1989 copy of SOTW doesn't list anything for Venezuela 1903, it shows a gap in the SG numbers around that time, 237 to 309 are not listed. Really do need to get hold of a South America catalogue!

Hi

Caution! Most of this stamps that are sold in the philatelic market are counterfeit/forgeries.
In authentic stamps the word ESTADO (vetical) is aligned with the word CORREOS (perfect angle aligned 90º):

Here are 2 counterfeit (top) and 1 authentic (below) to compare:

This is authentic. See the word ESTADO in relation to CORREOS :

This is a local issue and is know with the name of "Barquitos (Ship) Ban Right".
It exists with the localities of Guayana, Maturin and Mariño.

Best regards

Here's more information on the ship (taken from the German Wikipedia and translated using Google Translate):

Ban Righ

The Ban Righ was originally a British merchant steamer in 1901 by a Venezuelan revolutionary committee was purchased in London for the government of Cipriano Castro to overthrow. In Antwerp , the steamer was with four guns and fitted to a warship converted. The crew including the commander , Willis, consisted of mercenaries , including a French Artillery - Captain , who oversaw the preparation of the guns on board, and almost as an artillery officer in the Ban Righ served. The name "Ban Righ" is Scottish (pronounced Benn Rih), meaning "The female king", that is queen.

In Martinique, a revolution force was taken on board. From the end of 1901 to March 1902 was operating the Ban Righ , which is now in Libertador was ("The Liberator"), renamed to the Venezuelan coast and was extended by the gunboat government restaurador under the command of Roman Delgado Chalbaud hunted. On 7 Shot in February 1902, the Libertador from La Vela de Coro , the Government gunboat General Crespo , led by General Pedro Rivero Sotero to the wreck. Because of the defective boiler rebel steamer had in March 1903 in Cartagena , Colombia , and will start to be decommissioned. Perhaps the boilers were due to bribery by the Venezuelan Consul in Cartagena by sabotage has been rendered useless.

Apparently the boat was purchased in 1907 by the Colombian government for its navy, after he had eradicated many years in the harbor in front of him as a German Navy report stated. In Britain even the equipment of the steamer was followed very critical, since it was assumed that it may be experiencing a privateer of the Boers could act with which we are at war. Also have parallels to CSS Alabama pulled.

The Ban Righ is one of the few examples of modern naval history, in which a foreign merchant vessel bought in was converted into a warship, in a revolution to overthrow their own government. About 27 years later it was with the German steamer Falcon in Venezuela to give an analogy - except that this time Delgado Roman Chalbaud tried, the Venezuelan government of Juan Vicente Gómez overthrow - the same Gómez, with whom he had tried the Ban Righ off.

Makes very interesting reading,

Venezuelan crisis and monroe doctrine

That same month Theodore Roosevelt -- who was then Vice President -- stated that "if any South American country misbehaves towards any European country, let the European country spank it."

A brilliant piece for precis of events
