With the info given by t360, modern_who, and amitvyas03 on precancels, I have been doing some research on the subject. That is a great site precancels.com and info given by Precancel Stamp Society was very helpful.
I have alot of precancels from that last lot of stamps I got off of eBay.Was wondering if anyone else collects them ?

I always learn something new here everyday! Thanks everyone!

Gussyboy..Yes I started, just recently, to collect
U.S. Pre-cancels, mostly the Presidential issues
( Prexies ).

I will be working on them, with my
youngest grandson, Anthony.

I figure its a good way, for a six year old, to
learn and identify Presidents.

I don't remember ever running across precancels from anywhere but the US. Is this just an American phenomenon?

Precancels were used in a lot countries--Netherlands, Austria,Hungary, France, and Canada--to name a few. It was a quicker way to cancel mail-esp a big amount mail. The website says it was easier to cancel sheets of stamps compared to the same amount on envelopes--makes sense. The postage meter and bulk rate have caused the decline of precancels. What amazed me is that the site said there were 5-10 post offices still using precancels! I'll have to research more to find out where those are or if that info is the most current.

thanks guys I will double check and see what (if any) duplicates I have. I do know I have two different styles for OKlahoma City, Oklahoma, but I think that is all I have for duplicates. And so far my favorite is a #1282 $.04 B & W Lincoln with Amityville N.Y. on it.

I figure that if I can get one from every state I will then look inott the different values and different Cities. These Precancels would be an awesome topical collection in them selves.

That's right, guys. Precancels are very interesting and can be as small as just collecting for one state or collecting for all the US or perhaps just one country.I will copy a page of precancels so you can see what I have. I really like the history behind them.
