I'm certain this is a forgery or reprint but cannot find any online examples like this. It has a black outline around the dove and letter, Anyone familiar with this?
Drkohler - yes, that does appear to be the only one that matches the "2 1/2" in the lower left. But the black outline of dove and letter still baffles me. I was hoping a Swiss expert would be browsing this post and provide the "yes, it is ...". Oh well, all mysteries are not meant to be solved.
The problem is that for every "good" fake, there are dozens of fakes ranging from "very naive" to "simply bad". Fortunately the fakers likely got their image from a single source that forgot an important detail in the design, so 99.5% of all fakes are easily recognisable. There is only one "dangerous" fake known, from Sperati. It seems that every faker has tried to do his own Basel dove... Jean Paul Bach has written "the" book" about the dove. You can try to contact him: https://bach-philatelie.ch/
I can only afford reproductions (aka "fakes" or "counterfeits") of early Swiss stamps, but like you I've never seen an outlined dove-and-letter like that. This faker/copier must have not been completely sure the white space would end up looking like a dove with a letter, so he helped it along a bit. It's interesting, isn't it?
Unless, of course, it's an unknown and very rare Swiss printing variety of the Basel Dove and now you're a rich man.
I have just published a Youtube video on how to identify forgeries of the Basel Dove (and a previous one on the Double Geneva). This is very detailed and, if you're thinking of buying one, should help you avoid making a very expensive mistake. I hope you'll find this of use.
I think your stamp was made by a person who used one of the forgeries in my collection . Because it has the outline in black with the envelope outlined in black also . So yours is a nockoff from a previous made bogus copy.
I wish there were more quality videos for many other issues that are always problematic The link in my post above has many examples, some with the outlined dove.
