Blanche Stuart Scott (1885-1970)



Blanche Stuart Scott is considerd to be the first American woman aviator.
She got licence to fly in 1909 and in 1910 became a professional pilot.
She was the first woman to fly at a public event in America.
and in 1911 she became the first woman in America to fly long distance (60 miles non-stop).

Alli Paasikivi was wife to Finland,s President Juho Paasikivi 1946-1956
She was active in the lotta Svärd and a founder of Alli Paasikivi Foundation.
Alli Paasikivi was a member of honour nr.5 in Finland Scout Union.

Ntfombi (born Ntfombi Tfwala, c. 1950- ) is the Indlovukati ("Great She-Elephant") and Joint Head of State of Swaziland, and the mother of King Mswati III. Here is an image of a stamp reproducing a portrait (1985) of the Indlovukati by American artist Andy Warhol (1928-1987), designed and engraved by Miloš Ondrácek, and issued by Slovakia on November 13, 1996, Scott No. 258, plus an undated photo of Nftombi.

Melli Beese (1886-1925)



Melli Beese with her full name Amelie Hedwig Boutard-Beese
was the first woman in Germany to get a pilot`s licence (1911).
In 1912 she and her husband opened a flying school.
She was also aircraft constructor and inventor.

Quimby Harriet (1884-1912)



Harriet Quimby got in 1911 pilot license number 37 in became the first licensed woman pilot in the USA.
In 1912 she became the first woman to fly across the English Channel.
She died in plane crash at the Harvard-Boston Aviation Meeting.

Happy Birthday to Jane Addams (1860-1935), an American social worker, public philosopher, sociologist, author, and leader in women's suffrage and world peace. In 1889, Addams was a co-founder of a settlement house, the Hull House, in Chicago, Illinois, and in 1931 she became the first American woman to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Here is an image of a stamp featuring a profile portrait of Addams, designed by American artist William A. Roach (1888-1969), engraved by James T. Vail and Carl T. Arlt (vignette) and William B. Wells (lettering), and issued by the USA on April 26, 1940 as one of the Famous Americans series, Scott No. 878, plus an image of a photo of Jane Addams.

Caroline Aigle (1974 - 2007)



Caroline Aigle a French aviator became at the age of 25 the first woman fighter pilot in the French Air Force.
Her military career was short because she died from cancer.
She was posthumously awarded the Aeronautics Medal.

Juliette Dodu (1848-1909) was a legendary heroine of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, and the first woman to be awarded the Legion of Honor. Dodu rigged up a telegraph wire tap to intercept Prussian military dispatches and passed the information along to the French army, thereby saving thousands of French soldiers' lives. After Dodu was caught by the Prussians, she was tried for espionage and condemned to death, but was subsequently pardoned by prince Frederick Charles of Prussia. Here is an image of a stamp depicting a detail of the monument to Juliette Dodu located in Bièvres, France, and a printing telegraph machine, designed by French artist Claude Perchat (1952- ), engraved by Marie-Noëlle Goffin, and issued by France on October 28, 2009 to commemorate the centenary of Dodu's death, Scott No. 3727, Y&T No. 4401, plus a photo of the monument, created by French sculptor Anne, Duchesse d'Uzès (1847-1933).

Hi Primoz, I looked through your thread and was surprised that Rosa Parks had not turned up yet. The stamp was issued in 2013, for her 100th birthday. I'm sure you know of her biography and the impact she had in the US, fighting against racial discrimination.

Marie Marvingt (1875-1963)



Marie Marvingt was a French athlete, mountaineer, aviator and journalist.
In 1901 became the first woman to pilot balloons across both the English Channel.
In 1910 became the third woman licensed to fly an aeroplane.
During World War I became the first woman (probably) to fly combat missions as a bomber pilot.

Doña Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez (1773-1829), popularly known as "La Corregidora," was an insurgent and a supporter of the Mexican War of Independence. She was married to Miguel Domínguez, corregidor (chief magistrate) of the city of Querétaro, hence her nickname. Here is an image of a stamp featuring a portrait of Ortiz de Domínguez, printed by photogravure, and issued by Mexico on July 6, 1979 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of her death, Scott No. 1182, plus an image of the posthumous interpretation of Josefa Ortiz, dated 1880, which was the model for this stamp's design.

Amelia Earhart (1897-1937)



Amelia Mary Earhart was an American aviation pioneer and author.
In 1932 she became the first woman, and second person, to fly solo across the Atlantic (the first was Charles Lindbergh).
In 1935 Earhart became the first person to fly solo across the Pacific Ocean from Honolulu to California.
Earhart had set seven different women`s speed and distance aviation records.



During an attempt to make a flight around the globe in 1937 in Lockheed Model 10 Electra,
Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan disappeared over the central Pacific Ocean near Howland Island.
