Svetlana Yevgenyevna Savitskaya (1948- ) is a former Soviet aviator and cosmonaut who flew aboard Soyuz T-7 in 1982,
becoming the second woman in space some 19 years after Valentina Tereshkova. On July 25, 1984 she spent 3 hours 35 minutes outside the Salyut 7 space station.

Guðrún Lárusdóttir (1880-1938) was an Icelandic author, social activist, parliamentarian and the mother of ten children. Here is an image of a stamp reproducing a painted portrait of Lárusdóttir attired in the Skaut, the national costume of Iceland, by Icelandic artist Ásgrímur Jónsson (1876-1958), printed by lithography, and issued by Iceland on March 22, 1990, Scott No. 696, Facit No. 761, plus a photo of Guðrún Lárusdóttir holding her eldest grandchild in 1934. Bonus: Traditional costume.

Amy Johnson (1903-1941)



Amy Johnson a pioneering English aviator flying solo or with her husband, Jim Mollison.
She set numerous long-distance records during the 1930s.
In 1930, she became the first aviatrix to fly solo from England to Australia flying 18,000 km.

Ida Aalberg (1857-1915) was the best known Finnish actress of her time. Here is an image of a stamp featuring a portrait of Aalberg in a dramatic pose, designed by Finnish artist Aarne Karjalainen (1898-1965), engraved by Birger Ekholm, and issued by Finland on December 4, 1957 to commemorate the actress's birth centenary, Scott No. 351, Facit No. 489, plus a photograph of Ida Aalberg.

Eva Peron



María Eva Duarte de Perón (1919-1952) was the second wife of Argentine President Juan Perón and served as the First Lady of Argentina from 1946 until her death in 1952.
She was a part of international popular culture, most famously as the subject of the musical Evita (1976).

Frank Anne (1929-1945)



Anne Frank was a young Jewish girl who kept a diary while hiding from Nazi persecution in the Netherlands during World War II.
She and her family lived in a secret apartment in Amsterdam for two years before being discovered.
Anne died in a German concentration camp.
An abridgment of her poignant diary was published in 1947.

As the wife of President Tomás Estrada Palma, Honduran-born María Genoveva de Jesús Guardiola de Estrada Palma (1858-1926) was the first First Lady of independent Cuba, and the only one not born in that country. Doña Genoveva was a daughter of José Santos Guardiola y Ana Arbizú, an ex-president of Honduras, and a noted poet. Here is an image of an airmail stamp featuring a portrait of Doña Genoveva, engraved and printed by Waterlow & Sons, Ltd., and issued by Honduras on October 3, 1956, Scott No. C253, plus a snapshot of the former first lady later in life.

The "smallest" women on stamps



Madison Dolley (1768-1849) was the wife of president of USA James Madison.

It is one of smallest stamp in the world at all, it measures only around 18 x 20 mm from perforation to perforation.

Olivia Salamanca (1889-1913) was the second woman in the Philippines to earn a medical degree.
Natividad Almeda-Lopez (1892-1977) was the first woman to actively practice law as a profession and subsequently became the first woman Justice in the Philippines.
Engracia Cruz-Reyes (1892-1975) was a Filipino chef and entrepreneur. She was an active promoter of Filipino cuisine, especially through the restaurant chain she founded.

Ana Maria de Jesus Ribeiro di Garibaldi, best known as Anita Garibaldi (1821-1849), was the Brazilian wife and comrade-in-arms of Italian revolutionary Giuseppe Garibaldi. Here is an image of a stamp featuring a somewhat romanticized portrait of Anita Garibaldi, designed by Italian artist Roberto Franzoni (1882-1969), printed by photogravure, and issued by San Marino on July 31, 1949 as one of a set of eight stamps commemorating the centenary of Garibaldi's retreat to San Marino, Scott No. 300, plus an image of a photograph of Anita Garibaldi dressed as a man, c. 1842-49.

Bertha von Suttner (1843-1914)



An Austrian author of numerous antiwar novels and a tireless worker for world peace, Bertha von Suttner was influential in Alfred Nobel's decision
to establish the celebrated Nobel Peace Prize, of which she was the first female recipient in 1905.
The title of her major work, Die Waffen nieder (1889, Lay Down Your Arms), also became the name of her celebrated pacifist journal (1892-99).
Von Suttner organized and headed the Austrian Society of Peace Lovers.

María Luisa Dolz y Arango (1854-1928) was a Cuban teacher, writer and feminist activist who campaigned for women's rights in education. Here is an image of an engraved stamp featuring a portrait of Dr. Dolz, and issued by Cuba on December 23, 1954 to commemorate her birth centenary, Scott No. 534, plus a photo of María Luisa Dolz which was surely the model for this stamp's design.
