This June 30, 2006 stamp of Serbia (Michel #147) commemorates the 200th anniversary of the Serbian victory at the Battle of Misar, an important first step in the country's long road to full independence. The image is a detail from a painting by Serbian artist Paja Jovanovic (1859-1957) and shows a Serbian charge into the Ottoman position during the battle.

From Wikipedia, "The Battle of Misar took place from 12 to 15 August 1806, with a Serbian victory over the Ottomans. For months the Serbian insurgents remained entrenched in sconces on the field of Misar Hill as a pitched battle seemed suicidal from the Serbian standpoint since their army of 8000 men stood against an Ottoman force 40,000 strong...The fight at Misar lasted several days with mutual losses, but the battle itself ended with the collapse of the Ottoman center and the exposure the right and left columns."

In 1979 Japan began its campaign to establish "letter writing day" as the 23rd of each month. To publicize this, letter writing day stamps are issued annually.

On July 23, 1991, a set of two such stamps (Sc. #s 2116-7) and a miniature sheet (Sc. #2117a) containing one 62 yen stamp were issued. The 62 yen (high value) featuring a fairy as mounted mail carrier is shown here.
