Wadi Al-Hitan is a paleontological site in northern Egypt, some 150 km southwest of Cairo. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is known for its hundreds of fossils of some of the earliest forms of whale. The stamp set depicts fossilized and a reconstructed whale skeleton.

The stamp depicts the petrified forest near the city of Chemnitz in eastern Germany. The uprooted tree trunks were buried and silicified by volcanic ash as a resuit of the eruption of the Zeisigwald volcano ca. 290 million years ago.

The stamps of Bulgaria shouldn't count, as all the animals depicted lived into historic times. The last live Tasmanian wolf or thylacine was captured in 1933. The Steller's Sea cow lasted only 27 years between discovery and extinction.
