The first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens in April 1896. A set of twelve stamps was issued by Greece on April 6, 1896 to mark the occasion. The stamps were designed by Prof. Émile Gilliéron and engraved by Louis-Eugène Mouchon. Designs based on ancient Greek art and architecture connected with the games. In my opinion, one of the great sets issued by Greece and a diamond of my Greek mythology stamp collection: Boxers: The Discobolus ("Discus thrower"), bronze sculpture by Athenian sculptor Myron of Eleutherae, circa 460–450 BC: Athena, goddess of war and wisdom: Nike (Roman: Victoria), goddess of Victory, riding a chariot:
Olympic Stadium and Mount Olympus: "Hermes and the Infant Dionysus", sculpture by Praxiteles of Athens, the most renowned of the Attic sculptors of the 4th century BC. The sculpture was discovered at Olympia in 1877 and is exhibited at the Archaeological Museum of Olympia, Greece. |

The 1906 Olympic Games were held in Athens, Greece to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Olympic Games revival (the first was 1896). To publicize this event, Greece issued on March 25, 1906 a set of 14 stamps with 9 different designs. Here they are except two missing designs: Discus thrower, ancient Greek coin from Kos, ca. 480-475 B.C. Probably god Apollo: Jumper: Probably, Nike, goddess of Victory (according to Michel catalogue): Wrestling between Heracles and Antaeus, design based on an ancient Greek vase artwork, painted by Euphronios in 515-510 BC., Louvre Museum, Paris: The wrestlers, a Roman marble sculpture after a lost Greek original of the third century BCE. The sculpture is exhibited in the Uffizi Museum in Florence, Italy: Winged woman holding an hen, probably, Nike, goddess of Victory: Atlas brings the apples to Heracles while he is holding the sky, ancient Greek amphora: This set, together with the above 1896 Greek set, are among the jewels in my Greek Mythology stamp collection. Hope to complete them soon since the missing values depicting also figures of Greek mythology. |

To publicize the Summer Olympic Games held in Antwerp in 1920, Belgium issued a set of three engraved stamps in that year. The stamps were designed and engraved by the American Banknote Engraving Company. Year later, on May 6, 1921, the stamps were revalued and reissued: - Charioteer - Discus Thrower, original by Myron of Eleutherae (Roman copy) - Marathon runner

With the final installment, Royal Mail released a sheet with all thirty stamps. The stamps bear the official logos of the Games. A miniature sheet containing two first-class and two worldwide tariff stamps was issued to celebrate each of the Olympiad and Paralympics. These were inscribed "WELCOME TO THE LONDON 2012 OLYMPIC GAMES" and "Welcome to the London 2012 Paralympic Games". Each stamp and each miniature sheet itself bears the official logo of the event. Note the Olympic rings are replaced by arcs in the logo for the Paralympics. Each stamp depicts an event and a London sight. On the stamps issued to celebrate the Olympic Games, the sight either reflects or completes the image of the event. The sheets have a similar appearance. That issued for the Paralympics, however, looks like an afterthought. Unlike the earlier sheet issued for the Olympic Games, the sights and events are not integrated. Also, the setting and typeface of the inscription on the sheets are different. |

When the Olympic Games ended - the Paralympics do not draw much attention -, Royal Mail lost its milk cow. Royal Mail, however, issued a final miniature sheet. Again, it contained two first-class and two worldwide tariff stamps. The stamps show photographs of the events. Each stamp bears the logo of the relevant games. The miniature sheet was titled 'MEMORIES OF LONDON 2012". |
