Given the January cancel date, the possibility of other examples of RG81 coming to light is always there.

I have VERY serious doubts about the R53a, R66b or R69b being genuine.

One of the rarest items in the sale is lot 353, the RS89a. Extremely fine condition for this stamp which is notorious for usually being in very poor condition.

Lot 120 is interesting - a $5 parlor portrait sold in 2008 in Cunliffe for $97,850 as a green paper (RB10b) based on 1991 PSE and 1991 PF certs. Now with a 2015 PF cert as intermediate paper (RB10a) with a $10K-15K estimate.

Alas, it really is an intermediate paper. Scientific methods of examination are far more advanced today than they were in 1991.

I would like to ask the Revenue experts here to explain in more detail the differences in the paper that determine it is "intermediate", rather than green? In the Banknote-era papers (1870s-1880s) the paper that was "intermediate" was that which fell in thickness and porosity between "hard" and "soft" paper, thus "in-between". With the RBs, it obviously has totally to do with the COLOR of the paper? And I have seen quite a few "violet" described as "green" and, I think, vice versa. How do you guys say with certainty that the paper isn't "green" when it sure appears to be a lighter shade of green? Thanks in advance.

In this case viewing it under the VSC6000, which is highly accurate for areas of paper and ink study, plus it can answer many other philatelic questions as well. An amazing machine, I have observed it in action several times.
Also taking two low value green paper stamps and putting them on top of the $5 and viewing it under UV (green papers glow very bright green, violet and intermediate papers glow dull violet).
It's also true that the vignette of genuine green papers always seem to have a sepia toning to them that the violet paper and intermediate paper stamps do not.

I've heard more than one knowledgeable person remark that they don't believe a true RB10b actually exists, that ALL RB10 are violet/intermediate paper. I don't know enough about RB10s to have an opinion.

I have heard that going back at least 35 years, but I have not seen all the RB10b candidates so I do not know whether it is true or not.

Just received my copy of the catalog in the mail. Anyone else notice a problem with lot 346? Listed as RS72b (Curtis & Brown Mfg. Co. - CV $2,450) but it is actually RS70b (Curtis & Brown - CV $150).
