These do not come around often in an auction. This one has a catalog value of $450.00 and it could double that.

Why does encased postage stamps have the cut-outs on the side of the stamp? Why not just a circle of the stamp?

On an Encased Stamp the stamp itself is covered by a thin piece of plastic called "Mica", those tabs keep the Mica in place.

I still don't understand why they made these... was it sort of like the stamp was being used as cash?

This explains the short-lived encased postage .. I had never heard of it till a couple years ago when I saw one at an eBay auction and wondered about it.

http://arago.si.edu/index.asp?cmd=1...&tid=2036357 - if the link does not work - just search for encased postage and arago

Actually seen one on pawn stars with a 3 cent washington 65 . When the expert came along he said that the vast majority were dispossed of as they were no longer accepted and depending on the company the values can be really high. The one on the show had an auction estimate of 3-5000. Likely the $750 or so paid on ebay was a good buy.

Just for the record, MICA isn't plastic; it's a mineral.

I used to dig it out of the ground when I was a kid. There are a lot of old mica mines in western North Carolina.

Nice to see some items still achieve well above catalog value. I have to disagree with the sellers description of extra fine as it is clearly well off center high.
