This 25 is the biggest I've ever seen. 51R8

And it is on a cool campaign cover!

Cool. Yea, you can see the misperf caused the sender to use scissors for separation, which caused this.

I can't find anything online that shows pictures of the "eye curl". Can you show me or point me in the right direction?

Best is Richard Doporto's site, The One Cent Franklin Plating Archive:
http://www.slingshotvenus.com/Frank...hv_Main.html

And you're correct, the eye curls are on several of the Top row of the left side of Plate 7, and the curls are left of Franklin's eye, in the sideburn hair. On your stamp, it's visible between the first two cancel bars.

Check out the site-- great information, and you can also submit 1c 1851's and '57's for plating and certs at reasonable rates.

Ray

That's an excellent link, Ray. I'm just not seeing how this is an eye curl example. The 10L7 has a dot in the A that my stamp does not have. Maybe it's a different position. I cannot tell right now without my closeup images. I'll get a 3200dpi scan when I get home.

The picture is not very clear but right off the bat the wide margins make it look like a #24. What features do you see that makes you think it is a 21 and not a 24?

Nicholas, I think your 24 is 10L7, one of the "eye curl" positions.

Since there is a stamp to the right this cannot be position 10L7, but it is indeed an eye curl position from the top row of the plate. The curl can be seen between bars of the grid cancel (lower arrow in photo). Another tell for the eye curl position is the comma-like mark in the white medallion oval below the T of POSTAGE (upper arrow).

@dudley, thanks for the comment. I was thinking the same about the adjacent stamp now that I have seen the plate reconstruction images. I was doing more scans this morning, nothing much better than what I already had, and I'm still not convinced I see what you are seeing. Yes, there is a mark under the T, but it's not a comma laying on its side, not to me anyway. Going to look more later today or tonight.

Work is getting in the way of my stamp collecting!

Laurie 02: side ornaments incomplete = #24. All copies of #24 have broken top and bottom frame lines.
