Recently I was given my great grandfather's stamp collection. A few of the stamps are catalogued in books, but most of the stamps are strewn about in manila envelopes by country or by type. There really isn't great organization to this collection.

Additionally, I haven't the slightest idea where to start with having these appraised. I did read the initial posting from this group and it stated that 99.99% of people will not get rich off of selling their stamps -- I understand that. Where should I start? Should I first get all the stamps out in the open and placed into books regardless of organization before I bring them to a professional to have appraised?

I do not have the time to go through all of them and catalogue them, any suggestions? Thanks!

There are plenty of options but be prepared that there might not be monetary value there.

1. Look in your area for a local stamp club
2. Check out a Scott catalog or stamp catalog at your local library
3. Post some images of the oldest stamps in the collection here and get a quick free valuation.
4. Check to see if there is a local stamp dealer in your area.
5. Check to find a local stamp show and bring your stamps there for others to give you a quick assessment.

The stamps pictured are called precancels. None shown here are 'worth' over 10 cents - except the Newport News that catalogs 2.75 - and the Federalsburg MD about 2.00 - feel free to post more scans - ya never know!
