Rod, its interesting to note that the MS in your first post has the Mongolian country name sideways, in effect. It's a vertical cursive script (as seen on the stamps), and is very similar to Tibetan. There's nothing intrinsically wrong with the way it's presented but I don't recall seeing "Mongol Uls" written this way before. Use of the script was suppressed by the Soviets, along with all Mongolian culture and religion.

Cheers Tim,
perhaps that is why it is not listed Scott, maybe rejected material.
The progressive proofs would have a dodgy beginning I would think as well.

What I find confusing with the progressive proofs, is the precise registration of colours with the Mongol Script, I thought there would be some overlapping of colours,
yet it looks just perfect.

I don't remember seeing the transportation set when I last visited the postal museum in Ulaan Baatar (located on 1st floor of the Central Post Office, should you be passing by) but I certainly remember seeing the "world's largest stamp". You can still buy it at the postal counter.

It's intersting to see some of the modern Mongolian stamps, as I stop at the end of 1959. They get a bit too wall-papery for my liking after that.

It's tough at the coalface,
one has to grit one's teeth, and endure.

I have them, and it's not pretty, minisheets of Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley
one wonders how worse it can get.
The amazing thing is, they are holding value, there is a strong demand out there.

I've always been attracted to the stamps of Mongolia as their issues of the 70's and 80's (or thereabouts) were some of the first stamps I purchased as a kid through approval dealers like HE Harris. I was always fascinated by those huge mask stamps as a kid. It was actually stamps like that that attracted me to collecting. I mean, for a kid growing up in a small town in Iowa, what could be more exotic?

I realize you're probably being tongue-in-cheek, of course, but I don't think one would be passing by Ulaan Baatar on their way to anywhere.

I lost my composure there for a while, and cracked up.

In Australia, we received them amongst packets of Tea bags.
I wonder how many of these brightly coloured stamps, inspired kids into philately......

Those are the ones I'm thinking of. It would be interesting to know how many of those mask stamps (or indeed any Mongolian stamps of that era) got used as honest-to-God postage. I'm sure a few did here or there, but it's got to be an absolutely minuscule percentage of the total print run.
