Hallo, my name is Torsten and I come from germany. I hope my english is good enough that you understand me. A few weeks ago I bought an old stamp at eBay. He shows two kissing doves. A few days later I saw a similar stamp in the Michel USA special catalog. Now I would like to know whether the stamp is a single item or whether it is in a larger quantity. I hope someone can tell me something about it.

Hello. Could you please add a photo of what you are looking at in the Michel catalog that is similar to this? I am not an expert on these, but my first thought is that is looks more like a stamping device that might have been used for stationery or perhaps as a cachet for envelopes rather than as an official post office cancellation device. The theme of kissing doves and the joined hearts makes me think that this might be something people might like to have added as a decoration for Valentines Day?

There are articles about these devices in past issues of the "Chronicle", the journal of the USPCS. I have also seen them in auction catalogues (the device itself) with estimated sales prices between $200-$400. Covers and stamps with these devices used appear to be pricey. There are multiple designs. I have one with the American Eagle, with arrows in the talons above a field of 13 stars and two olive branches (minus the town slug).

These images are out on some magazine articles/advertisements.

These are sometimes referred to as "linen markers". Their typical use was for marking cloth; in a few instances they were used as postal handstamps. Because of the fame of the postal marking, I imagine an example of the device that made the marking still has some value but difficult to predict.
