Looks like Larue County. But I can't make out the town.

Hardin and Larue Counties are right next to one another. Could the sender have been mistaken?

Nolin...! Certainly looks like Nolin. I was only looking in Larue Co.

The stamp, I believe is in the "Claret" family of color. Although, it's a little brighter than Brown Claret, and lacks the sharpness of image for Deep Claret. So I'm not sure. (Some might say...clueless).

Doesn't resemble the claret we had with our venison steaks yesterday. Corked claret, perhaps?

Probably not a claret or an 1857 usage. A better image is always good but it looks like an orange red on an early '56 cover.

Winston, If I was charged for all the help I've received here, I'd have to sell all my stamps to pay the bill.

I have an Orange Red identified from plate 2 or 3. It seems much brighter and lighter than this one here.
I keep saying I shouldn't try identifying color using my scanner. Yet....here we are. Sorry.

I think it is probably an orange red but honestly I can't rule out brownish claret from the image. The impression looks pretty grainy, a common condition with the orange reds. Hopefully Gary will chime-in with what he thinks.

LaRue County was created from sectioning off the southeastern part of Hardin County back around 1843 so Nolin would have been in LaRue county at the time this letter was mailed. I am not sure about the details of how the county lines have changed over time but today Nolin is an unincorporated area within Hardin County so this unincorporated area must have been moved back into its original county jurisdiction.
