I've done U.S. stamps. Started a Canada collection. Next I'd like to tackle Great Britain. I have a very few of their stamps so far, so I'm looking to obtain a nice lot to really get started. I have lots of recent U.S. commemoratives I can offer in trade, or I'll just buy. Or I'll take duplicates you want to unload for free! Thanks in advance for your consideration.

Hi DaveG28,

Still looking for GB stamps? If so, send me a message or e-mail with your e-mail and I can send you several pages of scans of what I have available.
I also have Scott #s for them.

I do need some recent used USA stamps along with some USA PNC singles and W/W early Airmail stamps, also a few Canada specialized Airmails so I'm sure we could work up a trade.

DaveG28,

How are you going to go about this? I, like you, was strictly USA until about a month ago. Now its GB and Commonwealth. To simplify my collection, I am limiting it to the King George VI era. Its still a lot. Six Palo binders. You could limit your collection to GB only (no Commonwealth). That could work. Might I suggest that you purchase a Scotts 1997 Catalog, Volume 1B. Also, a Stanley Gibbons 1849-1970 catalog as both numbering systems are used. My SG catalog is a 2007 issue. For material, you could buy an incomplete collection to get started. That's what I did. Good Luck.

How are you going to go about this?

Jack...Sorry for the delay in replying. I'm kind of flying by the seat of my pants right now. I simply have acquired more Great Britain stamps than a page or two in my worldwide album will hold, so I thought I'd start branching out a little more. I currently have them all in a single stock book. Actually, what I like is the Elizabeth era commemoratives (they call them 'specials', don't they?) The machins seems a little daunting. I did receive one gift bag from oldguy here (thanks again!). I might take your advice and look for a starter collection at the local club's annual show in February. Yes, I think I'm going to limit myself to only GB. when you say Commonwealth, what are you referring to? Anything with Elizabeth's profile on it?

Elizabeth II commemoratives (I've never heard them called "specials") are plentiful and cheap, with the exception of one or two printing varieties that you don't need to collect. "Commonwealth" means, in essence, what was the British Empire. When individual countries became independent, they largely remained within the Commonwealth, and SG often lists post-independence stamps in its Commonwealth catalogue. I personally separate pre- and post-independence issues. Of course, countries with "Dominion" status - Canada, Australia etc - had autonomy from a relatively early stage, although the Queen remains their head of state.

GeoffHa...I thought I'd seen them referred to as specials on a website showing all of them going back many years. I could be wrong. Whatever they are called, even though they are cheap and plentiful, I find them fascinating. Lots of good history and subjects featured. I've obtained some recent ones that peaked my interest in this. And I'd really like to get those Pink Floyd stamps that came out in July! lol The stamps featuring different classic rock album covers were cool. And I did get most, if not all (I'm not sure), of the Beatles stamps a few years back.

Royal Mail refers to commemoratives as 'Special Stamps'. Example:

I'm sure that's where I saw it, thank you! At any rate, they seem to have been much more restrained with their number of issues over the years than us Yanks have been. I've been using this site as a reference so far. I trust it's complete?

"Commemorative" is obviously too long a word for the modern world!

Hi DaveG28,

I was wondering if you were collecting used or mint stamps? If you are collecting used stamps we may be able to work out some kind of trade. I need to organize the GB stamps next.

oceanguy: Primarily used, but I don't refuse mint. What kind of trade would you be interested in?

AnthonyUK: Wow! Very generous of you, thanks! I've PM'd you.

DaveG28 - I collect primarily used too, but like you do not refuse mint! I am thinking once I organize my UK stamps we could trade each other for stamps we need. I also have lots of dupes of Canadian stamps too, which I seem to recall you collect. I could probably get around to scanning my duplicates for both these countries in the next week or two ...

I am also open to other ideas too.
