I have a couple of questions about these two stamps. The questions have arisen from slight discrepancies between my Scott 2011 Specialized and the spaces provided on my White Ace pages:

According to Scott, 1581c (Americana Series, 1c Inkwell) was issued in 1977, but White Ace has a space for it (labeled "white paper") on a 1981 page. I would tend to put more weight on Scott's date, but White Ace has a space for 1582b (American Series, Speaker's Rostrum) on the same 1981 page, and 1582b was issued in 1981. Is there a reliable source to confirm 1581c's correct issue date?

As for 1582b (Americana Series, 2c Speaker's Rostrum), Scott lists it as "cream paper" whereas White Ace labels its space "white paper." So once again, is there a reliable source that can confirm which paper type is correct for 1582b?

Incidentally, Scott's value for 1582b cream paper variety is the same as the greenish paper 1582. But Scott doesn't list a value for 1581c. Is it extremely rare?

If someone could shed some light on any of this I would greatly appreciate it?

While 1582b is common, I have never seen 1581c. I had begun to doubt the stamp's existence, but have since been assured that it does (or at least did) exist. While not all unpriced items in Scott are rare, I suspect this one likely is.

Sc. 1581 was issued as a coil stamp in 1980 (or maybe '81.) Is that the cause for confusion? Its number is Sc. 1811.

I should add that I have an old Scott catalog that doesn't list a 1581b or c.

I googled "1581c stamp" and located a web site of someone who appears to sell stamps. He had 1581c on his list ... specified as RARE and unavailable. It would be interesting to see a cert on this stamp.
KGB: The minor varieties of 1581 would probably not be listed unless you had a Scott US Specialized. There is no 1581b, although presumably there was at some time in the past. 1581a is the untagged precanceled variety; 1581c is the white paper variety (dull gum only); 1581d is the tagging omitted (not precanceled) variety. Both 1581 and 1581d can have either dull or shiny gum, although I have never been able to find a 1581d with shiny gum.

Thanks KGB and JLL,
I agree that there was a coil of 1581's design issued on Mar. 6, 1980, (according to my Scott), and it is numbered Scott 1811. But it is designated as "greenish" paper whereas the 1581c is designated as "white paper". Apparently the 1581c is hard to find; I'm surprised White Ace provided a space for it. Has anyone ever seen an asking price for 1581c?

I was googling and ended up at this thread. It has no value in my 2017 Scott but Durland prices it at $25 from two plates: 38257, 38258. PNC3 has some pictures of it compared to the greenish paper version.

I have a white paper variety (1581c) with an APS certificate. I purchased the mint stamp about 5 years ago with the condition that it could get a certificate. There is a distinct difference with the paper. I've gone through literally thousands of used copies and never found one. They are obviously rare. I think I paid about $75 for it.
I also have an old color kit to determine the paper types on the 1582 and 1582b. It was from Gene Paquette about 1983. I don't believe he is even alive any longer. He used to make a lot of "kits" to help you sort the varieties, including the 1582's.

I would love to pay $75 for a 1581c. Durland is clueless on this one (and a few others)
