James that made me laugh - I have the 1984 edition - also picked up in a thrift shop! It does a fine job. At least it did til I got to South Africa Then the grainy b+w images just threw me into confusion. But for most general Commonwealth, I find its OK.

Here's my 1967 edition:

This is a great book and has influenced my collecting a lot.

Much of the book is about stamp design and the design approaches used over the years in many countries.

As a young collector I found it inspiring to have a book like this that took stamp design so seriously and didn't talk to down at all to beginner or junior collectors.

I still arrange my collection geographically in line with the excellent list of stamp issuing countries given at the end of the book.

Nigel,
I cut my teeth on an "Observers book of Birds eggs"
when I was just a tacker, around 7yo.
I had all my eggs in a timber box, full of cotton wool
I still can feel the smell, the texture the beautiful colour
of the egg of the Curlew.

I used to also collect newts,

I guess I was a born "collector" :)

Billig's Complete - volumes 1 - 44. I bought 1 - 43 and got them cheap because the seller thought they were complete. Just after they arrived, volume 44 turned up on eBay. I am a completist.

I just bought these two books a few weeks ago

Amos has a ton of old ones on sale for $8.95, so I grabbed two to see how I liked them.

Not yet Rod. I've got a number of the stamps but none has a paid cancel. Hopefully that situation will change after I read the book!

Here is one of the four illustrated plates accompanying the text that shows some of the 100+ cancel types that Linn identifies:
