Silk Tapestry of National Palace Museum
October 9, 1992
Ming Dynasty silk tapestry:
Two Birds Perched on a Red Camellia Branch (Size 23.420.5 cm)
Two Birds Playing on a Peach Branch (Size 2321 cm)
Silk tapestry is one of the most graceful products of ancient Chinese handicraft. Its technique is different from most other woven goods. In the making of most woven materials, the weft thread runs the entire width of the warp according to a fixed pattern to create the required design. In silk tapestry, however, the shuttle carries the colored weft thread back and forth across the warp only within the predetermined pattern until the design is completed.

Set of Four; one stamp depicts woolen industry.
England's woolen industry dates back over 2000 years and woolen cloth has been a prized export since Roman times. During the 12th Century wool became England's greatest natural asset as a major source of revenue through exports of both woven cloth and raw wool.
England's textile industry and the manufacturing of wool products grew during the 15th Century. The Framework Knitting machine, invented in 1589, was the first major stage in the mechanization of the textile industry.
Despite the rise of synthetic fabrics during the 20th Century wool has remained an important product. Wool is now being recognized as a uniquely versatile and sustainable product.
