2508-2511 are missing "USA", the 25 cent denomination, and the name of the animal. Interesting find!

After liberation from the Germans in August 1944, many French towns and Cities made Liberation overprints for their stamps. Only a few were recognized by the French authorities.

These unofficial overprints for Metz are listed in a Catalogue of French Fantasy and unofficial stamps by Bourdi.
They are also listed in the Ceres and Dallay catalogue [Thanks Ryan] and catalogue at 300 MNH to 270 used.

This block needs to be put under a UV light to make sure that the stamps were not chemically altered to remove the denomination and the USA. Especially since the date is still on each stamp.

Yeah revcollector I was just noticing that also as there doesn't seem to be any color omissions but yet the USA and denominations are gone?

I haven't checked under a light yet others seem to be the same way (see link), I assumed that the year is not true black and therefore is there.

hmm looks like you might have something there! Still, though, rule out the obvious first. Man that would be nice score to find in a box lot huh?!

The postmarks on that 2508-2511 block is also interesting. The CDS is almost certainly White Horse Beach, Massachusetts (a section of Plymouth) yet it is an extremely late use of what appears to be a duplex cancel with the typical football-type killer. The secondary cancel -- which looks to be part of a machine cancel with the word "RECEIVED" interlaced, is also a bit interesting, as I don't recall seeing an example (or at least a modern example) like that before. Then again, we're talking about a very small post office, so maybe the cancellations in use were not at all up to date.

It's like a hybrid Received mark with a wavy killer bars like of the flag cancel era? Neat though.

4 of the six items on offer are from 'Cheatin'' Bill and all have different prices ! Prices from $275 to $600 from the same seller for the same item says a lot about the man.
To make it even more amusing, the most expensive of the lots has a scan of an ordinary block !

I have a BIN item of Cheatin Bill in my 'watching' list and it's been there for over two years ! It will never sell but it keeps me amused every time it comes around to the top of the list.

Thanks LB, I'm still around and still looking at posts from time to time, just way too busy (have a 2 yo daughter)...

Got a so so deal for those, about 40% cat. value for the banknote issues and 20% the others. Not quite good but I don't have time to play the "wait and snipe" game on eBay so I got them anyway.

Now I started to fill my postage due pages, here is what I got in the post this morning

D40 - D45

D46 - D55

D56 - D68

D69 - D76

btw LB, I just found an unopened package from you (guess its been sent in 2011)...quite heavy, any idea whats inside?

Just got this in a few days ago. This completes the Louisiana purchase exposition set! Robert Livingston (along with James Monroe) were the two US diplomats who went to France and signed the pact that transferred the Louisiana Territory ownership from France to the US.

Scott #323 Robert Livingston

I unblushingly post the completed set without further comment.
