Banja Luka is the second largest city in Bosnia and Herzegovina after the capital Sarajevo and is the largest city of the Republika Srpska entity. Beginning of the tennis in Banja Luka dates to June 1907 with the foundation of its first tennis club.

Arthur Ashe (1943-1993) was the first African American man to win Grand Slam tennis tournaments Wimbledon and the United States and Australian Opens. Ashe became as renowned for his intellect, moral character, and commitment to social causes.
